Blended families, those households with a parent, at least one child, and a new partner, often experience some level of difficulty. Discord between parents and children, tension between ex-spouses, and a lack of extended family support are issues commonly experienced. This workshop will introduce interactive tips for encouraging healthy practices and strategies for fathers in blended families such as practicing forgiveness and communication, pre-family counseling, and the important of parenting coordination. With the rise of the divided family, young people often get caught in patterns of addiction as an escape from high conflict parents. This happens inside the home and after divorce and in remarriage. This workshop will explore some of the common roots to the issue of kids impacted by divorce who turn to addiction as a way out of the pain. We will also take a look at research and today's pop culture and media with a goal of increasing compassion and understanding for those clients and organizations we serve. This workshop will include digital videos and a chance to review new resources to help with these issues. Practitioners want to know more than whether their program works. They want to know what they can do to improve it. To help answers these questions, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is increasingly focused on identifying and studying the components of its grant-funded programs. In this session, participants will learn about this new research perspective and how they can apply it to their programs. After a brief introduction to the Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) National Evaluation, the session will identify the range of program components found across the SRAE grantees. Participants will examine a case study of an SRAE program and work to define and identify the components contained in this program. Participants will also learn about ways to test and refine program components using an example from an ACF-funded healthy marriage and relationship education program. Prevention in marriage is three times more effective than intervention. Presently, many churches lack an effective structure to prevent crisis. They have premarital counseling and crisis counseling, but no structure to help couples during their marriage. Couples will be no more intentional with their marriages than churches are with their marriage ministries. After the death or loss of a parent, do the children have time and space to grieve? Many bio parents and stepparents give the "deer-in-the-headlights" look when asked this question. Three different family constituents bio parent,stepparent,and grieving child bring three different sets of needs into the new family dynamic. In this session, learn how to recognize and validate multiple levels of often competing needs in grieving families. Through case study work within the session, join discussions about ways to nudge family members down a more empathetic path, one in which children have the space to grieve.Speaker: Diane Fromme

Over the past 15 years, Montefiore's Supporting Healthy Relationships Program has delivered healthy marriage and relationship education services to thousands of low-income and underserved couples in the Bronx community. This workshop will summarize our recent research outcomes in order to highlight how SHR successfully stimulates healthy and lasting relationships. We will also demonstrate, using recorded video clips, how we intervene directly with couples within the context of psychoeducational workshops, as well as during individualized “booster” sessions, using process-oriented interventions drawing from Irvin Yalom’s and psychodynamic group therapy and emotionally focused therapy (EFT). Learn how the evidence-based Creating Lasting Family Connections® (CLFC) Curriculum Series developers successfully conducted a statewide roll out across Ohio as the focal point of the Children of Incarcerated Parents (COIP) project. The overarching goal of COIP is to mobilize service systems throughout the state to build resiliency, develop resistance skills for substance use and address trauma in children of incarcerated parents and their families.
